Role play writers

In English, the children who were working on Step 3 went into the role play area to find items they would like to ask for Christmas. They then wrote them in a sentences and included commas to separate items in a list.

Kindness Week

We having been learning how to be brave and how to over come our fears. We discussed how it felt to try something new such as learning to ride a bike or climbing a high mountain and how it can feel ‘scary’. We spoke about how we might not try these things because of feeling afraid. Next we discussed the benefits of trying new experiences and having a positive mindset and never giving up.

We all agreed that we felt more positive about trying and failing than never trying something new !

Internet Safety

We have been learning how to stay safe online. We also learnt what the actual ages are to access certain social media and why they have age restrictions on them.

Multiplication

In maths we have started a new topic on multiplication and division. Today we looked at making equal groups of numbers to help us with our 2, 5, 10 or 3 times tables. We also looked at vocabulary such as ‘equal groups of’ and ‘lots of’.

Making Roman Shields

Super Smoothie Workshop

This morning we had a visit from 2 ladies from the local bank who talked to us about budgeting, saving money, profits, spending and ways to make money. Together we worked together to plan and budget a smoothie workshop and decided on the best way to spend our budget to make the biggest profit.

The biggest profit was £26!

Comparing Westhoughton to London

In Topic we have new looking at London as it is our capital city. Some children made Lego models of the famous landmarks that are found there.

Headteacher’s Award

This young man won the Headteacher’s Award for having a wonderful attitude to learning and for being really proud of his achievements.

DEWA Roman Experience – The day we became Roman Soldiers!!

The Woodpecker class visited the Roman city of Chester to find out more about the Romans. We visited the DEWA Roman museum and looked at lots of different artefacts and heard tales about the Roman way of life from our tour guide.

After lunch we became Roman soldiers and marched around the streets of Chester. We became gladiators and also learned Roman phrases in Latin. It was great fun!

Our new book

In reading we have started a new book – The Dinosaur That Pooped Christmas! We looked at the front cover today and made predictions about what we think might happen. We think we’re going to enjoy this book!

Battle Cry

Our new topic for English this week is about presenting a ‘Battle Cry’. Today we listened to a battle cry, read it as a script then we explored how a battle cry is written and the reasons why certain features are needed.

We are looking forward to writing our own battle cry and presenting it in front of the green screen next week.

Finding change

Today in Maths we had the challenge of finding change. We used our coins to help us. It was tricky but after lots of examples from the adults in the classroom, we got the hang of it!

Chinese New Year

In the Woodpecker class this week, we have found out more about the Chinese New Year and how it is celebrated.

We discovered that red is used as the main colour of celebration because Nian the dragon, who used to destroy the crops, was chased away by the colour red.

Wonderful writing

In English this week we are writing a story about Robbie the robot. These three wonderful writers went to show their work to Mrs Forshaw. She was so impressed that she gave them each a sticker!

Home Acheivements

Wow! The Woodpecker class have been very busy at home earning a wide range of achievements for dancing, swimming, gymnastics and other sports and hobbies.

The children shared their home achievements with the class and we enjoyed listening to the children present their awards.

Christmas card design competition

We held a Christmas card design competition in school. We had some very creative entries!

The Storm

We have started our new unit in English which is poetry. To start with we have listened to and read ‘The storm’ which is a descriptive poem about the weather. In groups we annotated the features and magpied the key language. We really enjoyed this poem.

Pudsey Competition

To help celebrate Children in Need day, we held a competition where children had to make a pudsey. We had some excellent entries – a 3D printer Pudsey, a biscuit pudsey, a teddy pudsey and many more. They look fabulous!

Identifying Multiples

This morning the Woodpeckers have been busy identifying the multiples of 11 and 12, exploring patterns and using visual resources to make up the multiples in groups. Some children developed their learning further by multiplying the multiples by 10 or 100 therefore creating answers with 4 or 5 digits.

Writing narratives

Today the Woodpecker class have been very productive writing some incredible narratives. We used Excitable Edgar as our stimulus but created our own characters and settings to create our own stories.

Mrs Latham was amazed by the description and detail used.

PE

In our two PE lessons this week we’ve been learning about how to roll a ball. We then moved onto kicking the ball with the inside of our foot to make sure the passes are more accurate.

Topic- Design and create an air raid shelter.

The children learnt facts about air raid shelters including what they were made from and where they were built. The children then designed their shelters considering the structure and materials they would use to protect a lego family from wind, water and cold.

The children began making their air raid shelters.

We then discussed challenges they faced when making them and what they would change next time to improve them.
