Year 3/4- Starlings: Blog items

SPORTS WEEK RESULTS........

Date: 14th Jul 2020 @ 9:48am

I have counted up the overall scores for this years Home Olympics. The results were very close, so many of you took part and there were some amazing scores from pupils and parents across the school. The overall winners have been decided on the class which had the highest participation from its pupils.

This years winners are....

Well done to Mr Simpson and his new Eagles class!

Fifa Forum Tournament (9) — FIFA Forums

Some indiviudal winners include -

Well done to everyone who took part - you all posted excellent scores and it is important to take into consideration to range of ages across school. Use it as motivation to train and try even harder for next time. If you are somebody who feels disappointed when you do not win, remember that it is OK to feel this way. What is important is how you react to this. You should always show dignity in defeat, congratulate the winner or winners and use your disappointment to motivate you next time. Every single professional athlete will have experienced defeat at some point in their life, especially in their younger years, and if you ask many of them they will tell you how much losing can help motivate them to succeed in the future.

Happy Tuesday children.

Super work yesterday, I was very impressed yesterday by your creativeness. Superstars!

Today’s task:

This is a 2 day task so will take up today and tomorrow. I would like you to research all about something that you are interested in. Maybe you are really interested in a certain sport or hobby, perhaps you enjoy finding out about animals and nature, maybe Science or History is something you enjoy. Make it really detailed and as colourful as you can and think about how you are going to present your research. You could make a poster, a powerpoint, a written factfile...

I would research all about Enid Blyton because she was my favourite author growing up and I loved re-reading 'The Adventures of the Wishing Chair' because I thought it was such a magical story.

What/who will you research?

Have a great day!

Good morning Starlings!

Welcome to a new week. I really enjoyed getting to know you all last week and I have some more exciting tasks for you to complete this week!

Today’s task:

If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Build, draw or paint your dream house. Perhaps it’s a castle or a tree house. Maybe it is as tall as the sky and has a slide for you to reach the bottom.

Write 5 sentences about your house to tell us more about it. Talk about the colour, the rooms, the height, the size ….anything you like

Don’t forget to blog them when you have finished. Keep them somewhere safe for September too!

Zoom Calls:

Just a reminder that our zoom transition calls are today and tomorrow. Don't forget to bring something that is special to you and as it's the first time I have met some of you, please make sure the name shown on the screen is your own and not a parents.

Have a a great day!

Well done for all the fantastic contributions to the blog this week. You have all tried so hard on your transition tasks, I can't wait to see what you all come up with next week!

Have a wonderful weekend!

HEALTH AND FITNESS WEEK DAY 5

Date: 10th Jul 2020 @ 8:40am

Today will be our last day of the Virtual Health and Fitness Week - in my opinion it's the best one yet. I would like to start by thanking all of you who participated and challenged yourself this week. I have honestly been blown away by how many people participated this week and I hope that you have all had fun. Hopefully, some of you may have taken something from this week that has inspired you to try and make every week a Health and Fitness week in the future!

Activities for today

1) Let's get warmed up with a 5 minute workout from Joe.

If you are feeling an extra challenge - you could try one of his full workouts on the link below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3m5DlVnxLjk

2) Activity Bingo - today is your last day to finish the activity bingo - can you get gold?

3) Balloon Tennis -

Challenge someone in your house to a game of balloon tennis! I used two chairs and tied a piece of string to make a net. If not, a piece of string, ribbon, scrunched up t-shirt etc. would do the job! Try not to let the balloon land on your side of the 'net'!

Extra challenge - tie an old rag or dishcloth into a knot and use that as a slightly heavier 'ball'. You could use an even heavier pair of socks for an even harder challenge!

Water Bucket Shuttle Run

I saw this idea on Twitter and thought this would be great fun. Get two buckets, one empty and one full. Place them at opposite ends of the your garden. See how much water can you transport to the other in 5 minutes. Measure the water you have transported at the end and let me know how you got on - I am going to give this a go tomorrow! (A bit of Maths involved in there for you too Mr Simpson!)

@PEStJamesNN5 PE challenge with wather and sponge made Wiktor very tired and excited;););) Enjoyed so much !!! pic.twitter.com/l6Sg1Tiiqo

Home Olympics - Final Event

In my opinion - the hardest yet! They may look simple but this is a very tiring activity which will test your core stregth and stamina. This is a core activity that many professional athletes do daily to help keep them super fit and healthy.

The task is to see how many you can do in one minute.

Have a rest in between and try this 3-5 times to see how high you can get your score!

There will be a survey sent out on School Spider later today to submit your final scores for the week. Then we can see which class has won this years Home Olympics!

Have a great day everyone. I hope you enjoy the activities planned. Send in your pictures and videos for me to check out and repost.

Starlings New Blog 10th July

Date: 10th Jul 2020 @ 8:32am

It’s Friday and the end of our first week together. Let’s finish the week of with another task!

Today’s task:

Today I would like you to complete a book review about your favourite book from yesterday. Use a piece of A4 paper. Draw a picture and write the title of your book in the centre. Then, around the outside, use bubbles, sections or clouds to tell me about the characters, setting, the main events and why you like it.

When you have finished, colour it in!

Don’t forget to blog it when you have finished. Look out for the celebration post later today!

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

HEALTH AND FITNESS WEEK - DAY 4

Date: 9th Jul 2020 @ 8:41am

Good morning everyone!

I absolutely loved seeing your Yoga pictures yesterday. There were some amazing efforts across school and at home in the Washing Basket Challenge - it is safe to say that I did not win with my wonderful score of 4. Congratulations to Miss Southern who won the teachers competition - she scored 27!

Today's activities

1) Activity Bingo

Remember to try and tick off as many activities as you can! I've seen some great photos of your activities at home so far.

2) Mindfulness Day

Being healthy is not just about looking after your body, it's about looking after your mind. Although exercise is one of the best things you can do to keep a healthy mind, it is also important to be mindful and take time to think about the world around you - something which can be very difficult with the pace of modern life and the lure of technology/screens.

Here are some activities which can help us to be mindful, maybe you could try one today.

Click here for more details on these activities.

https://biglifejournal.com/blogs/blog/5-fun-mindfulness-activities-children-breathing-exercises

Some other activities:

1) Yoga is also an excellent activity for both your mind and your bodies. If you enjoyed it yesterday, try this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZpkRAcgws4

2)Meditation is a nice way to relax and relieve anxiety after a busy day:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWOHcGF1Tmc

3) Colouring! Spend 15-20 minutes colouring simple patterns. This is a great way to focus your mind on a relaxing task.

4) Turn your phones off and go on a nice walk - what sounds can you hear?

Activity 2 - Horizontal Rock Climbing

Find as many pairs of clean shoes or socks and scatter them across your carpet like grips on a rock climbing wall.

Can you try to get across the carpet by only placing your hands and feet on the shoes/socks?

You could challenge each in your house by making tricky routes for them to pass through.

For an extra challenge - try and keep your body as low to the floor as possible when moving. Can you try and make a course around your whole house? You could be creative with what you use for grips - phone cases, shin pads, books, coffee cup lids angel.

Try and make it as long/tricky as possible and send me what you have done!yes

Home Olympics Challenge - Day 4 - Star Jump Challenge

This challenge is simple as it only includes one movement, however it will test your stamina and quick footwork.

How many can you complete in one minute? Keep a record of your scores to complete tomorrow.

I will try my attempt this morning and then post the teacher scores later on in the day - keep posted!

Good luck everyone and have a great day!

What an amazing day again yesterday -  I cannot believe how many photos and videos were submitted yesterday. 2) Let's get dancing!

There are two Yoga sessions for you to try today - one aimed at KS1 and one aimed at KS2. Why don't you try and research about Yoga first before you try it. Where was it created? What is it used for? Good morning Starlings!

I was so impressed by your self-portraits. You made them really colourful and I think they are going to look fantastic in our new classroom! Don't forget to keep your work safe and bring it all back in September.

Today’s task:

We are in the Starling class. What can you find out about starlings? Search on the Internet or look in a book and find out what you can about this wonderful bird. Then present your findings. You could draw a picture of a starling, write a paragraph or some sentences about them, brainstorm facts or make a fact file.

Don’t forget to blog your work! I can’t wait to see you in the Starling class!

Keep a lookout for Mr Horsley's Health and Fitness Week blog post. I gave the long jump challenge a really good go yesterday and it took me a few tries but I jumped 1.7m! I think I'm going to try and beat that number today though. I better get stretching!

Have a great day!

Happy Tuesday Starlings!

I hope that you had a good day yesterday and thank you for blogging your work. There were some fantastic posters that helped me get to know you.

Today’s task:

Are you ready to get arty? Today I would like you to draw and colour/paint a self-portrait of yourself. The best way to do this is to either grab yourself a photo to copy or look in the mirror and copy what you see bit by bit.

Try to make your portrait quite big, about A4 size, and please take a picture and upload it onto the blog when you have finished.

Don't forget to have a go at today's challenges on the Health and Fitness blog post!

Have a great day!

Good Morning Starlings!

I am so excited for the year ahead and getting to know you all very soon in our zoom calls!

I wanted to start today's blog by saying a big welcome to Year 4 and your new blog.

Over the next 2 weeks I will set you some tasks to complete at home to help us to get to know each other and get ready for our new class in September.

Anything that you complete at home, please blog it and also keep it safe. I would love for you to bring them in in September so that I can display them in class.

Today’s task:

Today I would like you to create a poster all about you! You could put a picture in the middle and create sections about your family, your hobbies, your favourite things and anything else that you would like to share.

Take a picture and blog your poster when you have finished.

This week is also Health and Fitness Week. Everyday Mr Horsley will set a separate task on the blog for you to complete at home. Don't forget to try these out and let me know how you get on.

Have a great day!

The Final Starlings Home Learning Post

Date: 3rd Jul 2020 @ 8:57am

Good morning Starlings!

Today’s morning post is slightly different to normal. Not only is it the last post you will have to look at for Starlings this school year (as from Monday you will be looking at your new class’ page), but it is also, sadly, the last blog post that I will be writing to you.

This is by no means how I wanted to be able to say goodbye to you all, and when school closed 14 weeks ago, the thought of seeing you all back in school before the term ended has kept my spirits high. Unfortunately, as we now know, this will not be possible due to the infection rate still being high, however, the most important thing is that you are all still safe and that is all that matters.

I have been looking back over the work you have produced since September, and the amount of work and the quality of it has increased massively and I couldn’t be prouder of each and every single one of you.

We have has our fair share of tears and have done well to nearly fill an accident book this year (Well done Matylda and Eva!), but those are all overshadowed by the incredible amount of laughs and good times in school that we have shared. To list all of my favourite memories would take all morning but I will never forget our first day, the trip to the Roman museum and the fantastic costumes you wore for World Book Day.

Today, for you home learning, I would like you to recap the year and think about your favourite memories. You can tell me all about them in any way you would like, such as through a drawing, a poem, a story or a letter. Any format you would like. This is one home learning task I would like you all to take part in regardless of your participation before, as it will be lovely to see what everyone’s favourite memories have been. **Please upload this to the new discussion page so we can all share the memories and pictures together!

It has genuinely been my privilege to teach you all this year, a task that would not have been possible without the help of Mrs. Boneham, Mrs. Finlay and Mrs Roberts. Together we have worked through the hardest of times due to the Covid-19 outbreak, but your smiles and sense of humour have kept us all going.

Some of you may be nervous about moving up to your next class but I promise you that your next teachers are lovely. They will all make sure that you have a fun and exciting year whilst making lots of progress. I’ll be keeping in touch with the staff to check on how you are all doing and to make sure you are all behaving well (Travis...).

Thank you for being an amazing class Starlings, everyone is always telling me that you never forget your first class and I can guarantee that that will be true for me.

Enjoy the next two weeks with your new teachers and then have the best summer holiday you can!

Stay safe Starlings! All the best,

Mr Dean

There will be new tasks set on the discussion blogs so look out for these. The writing will link to the Oak Academy English tasks which you completed last week so this should help you with your task.

Our Recommendation:

The Oak Academy has lots of other resources ready for you to explore!

Here is a link to the activity clubs. I this you will find lots of ideas for different subjects including art.

Good morning children,

See the source image

Today is going to be a lovely day. Enjoy the sunshine but don’t forget to stay safe.

Today’s learning:

Today’s learning is using the Oak Academy for both English and Maths. Some of the maths videos only have a few questions to complete so you can use ixl to support any learning at home if you would like to. I have listed possible codes below. They are purely a suggestion, not expected.

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-describe-unit-and-non-unit-fractions

ixl codes which link to your work are: Year 3 w2, w8, w10  or Year 4 y6, y11, y12
