Strengthening materials and structures

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 2:36pm

In DT we looked at how to strengthen materials and structures, through a range of challenges.
For our first challenge we needed to create a bridge out of paper which would with hold a toy car, we concluded that a concertina style would be sturdier due to the layers and the fact it is made up of triangles.
In our second challenge, the children were tasked with creating a square which was not flimsy. We learnt that this was impossible and discussed shapes which would have been stronger. We discussed how a triangle was stronger as it stabilises, supports and strengthens.

Fitness Challenge

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 2:35pm

Today, Doves worked hard to complete a range of fitness challenges. They worked on ten different exercises ranging from star jumps to planks. We worked for 30 seconds with a 30 second rest and completed 3 rounds! We then took part in a plank challenge at the end. All children showed amazing resilience.

Four Goodness Sake

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 2:29pm

In Maths, to consolidate our learning of BIDMAS (understanding the order of operations) we took part in an investigation. We had to create the numbers 0-20 using a range of operations and using only the number 4, four times. It was challenging but the children showed a growth mindset.

Batik

Date: 11th Mar 2020 @ 2:16pm

As part of our Art topic we have been creating a piece of Art in the style of William Morris using the technique Batik. This is a technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to a fabric. We applied the wax this week and painted the background using dye.

Merseyside Maritime Museum

Date: 11th Mar 2020 @ 2:11pm

Yesterday, we attended the Merseyside Maritime Museum in Liverpool as a link to our topic work on the Titanic. Inside the museum, we explored various sections, detailing facts and statistics from the very start of the Titanic, looking at the links to Liverpool, right up to how we remember the passengers and the Titanic now.

We then took part in a workshop called ‘Voyage Discovery’ this was a unique learning opportunity whereby children were presented with a range of objects which could be handled, tried out, worn and even smelt! They were also given the opportunity to discuss and take part in dramatisations about the ship, exploring experiences associated with it.

We had a great day and learnt so much!!
