Doves - Exploring CAM Movements

Design and Technology

Today in Design and Technology we started to look at what makes toys move - CAMS.

We looked at a simple mechanism and the features it consists of: Crank Handle, CAM, Axel, Follower and a frame. Before discussing the purpose of these and labelling them.

Once we completed this, we began to look at the different types of CAMs and the movements we make. Considering which ones we would use for our final outcomes. In pairs, we then began to make and develop one before evaluating it.

They worked extremely well together in their pairs, enhancing their social development.

Doves - Science - LO: To identify inherited characteristics in living things

Date: 3rd Nov 2020 @ 5:28pm

Evolution and Inheritance

Even though we're working from home, Doves class have been working tremendously hard on their new Science topic 'Evolution and Inheritance'.

Initially, the children learnt about the term 'inheritance' and what traits we can 'inherit' from our parents and ancestors. Based on this, they create their own unique post card of details.

Following on from this, we learnt about the difference between 'inherited' traits and 'environmental' traits, sorting between the two.

Step 1:

Step 2:

Step 3:

Doves - Physical Challenge

Date: 23rd Oct 2020 @ 8:03am

Physical Challenge

To support the children with their physical development we incorporated a physical challenge into our daily mile time.

During this time, the children used an Active Alphabet. The aim was to complete the word as many times as they could in 5 minutes.

They have all worked hard to improve their scores from the previous week, encouraging their partners as 'motivation buddies'.

Digital Citizenship

Date: 19th Oct 2020 @ 10:59am

Doves were surprised to learn that watching electronic screens before bedtime affects their ability to sleep.  They also learned that searching or playing an electronic device can become addictive.  We had a good discussion about how to limit our time when we are using an electronic screen.  New language was introduced in our lesson and the children understand that melatonin and dopamine are affected by electronic devices.

UKS2 Assembly

Date: 15th Oct 2020 @ 1:00pm

British Values

This week, our UKS2 assembly focused on the British Values (democracy, individual liberty, tolerance and rule of law). We discussed what each of these meant and how we promote these values in school.

Here are our ideas:

We then used this to help us with our Big Question "How do the British Values help us to become better citizens?"

- Rule of law teaches us to obey the law and society. This helps us to become a better citizen because we understand what we can and cannot do.

- Individual Liberty, this helps us to become a better citizen as we know that our voices and our opinions are welcome and will be heard. It helps to strengthen us being a democratic society.

Doves - Classifying Leaves

Date: 13th Oct 2020 @ 3:46pm

Science

Today, we continued learning about classification and dichotomous keys using leaves.

Firstly, we used the outdoor environment to explore and collect a range of leaves.

Following on from this, we learnt about different observable characteristics on a leaf. Examples:

- Is it a simple or compound leaf?

- What is the leaf arrangment? Opposite or alternate.

- What does the base look like? Rounded, Tapering, Uneven, Heart?

Finally, we used all of this information to work in groups to create a dichotomous key, classifying the leaves. This activity supported their social development as it provided children with the opportunities to work together in teams, enhancing communication skills.
