Year 5/6 - Doves: Blog items

Doves - 5th May - Home Learning

Date: 5th May 2020 @ 7:24am

Good Morning Doves! I was super impressed with the engagement and participation in LBQ yesterday – it is great to see so many of you working on it and continuing to develop your learning.

Today's Home Learning:

  1. English - mch
  2. Maths - ycf
  3. Reading Solutions / Read Theory (Y5)- 1 comprehension (minimum)
  4. Writing/Spellings – I have posted two new discussions with your weekly spellings and your writing task. Remember these are both due in on Friday.
  5. VE Day – Try to complete as many VE Day activities as possible (in school this week we have created WW2 artwork so far – have a look at the blog for some inspiration).

Writing:

This is a great example of a Newspaper Report, completed by Olivia in Eagles! Super work Olivia!

Maths Support:

Yesterday, there seemed to be some misunderstanding from some children over the Maths Tasks. If you are usually in my maths class, complete the Miss F's maths task; if you are usually in Mr S's maths class, complete the Mr S's maths task.

Most of you will use chunking to complete today's task. Remember, start with 100 or 10 lots & find 50 or 5 lots and go form there.

This slide show is a good reminder:

VE Celebrations KS2

Date: 1st May 2020 @ 11:00am

VE Celebrations – WB 4.5.20

Dear Parents,

Next week marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day and despite not being in school, we would still like to be able to celebrate this with the children.

It would be brilliant if at home you could have a tea party or a picnic on Friday as a special celebration on this day. Some streets are planning a ‘Stay at home street party’.

At home, it would be great if your child could make a VE Day t shirt (decorate a plain t shirt using felt tips of fabric paint) which they can wear to their own VE Day tea party/picnic.

Here are some ideas for your child to complete at home if they would like to. If you do complete any of these activities, we would love you to share them with us on the blog.

Here are some websites which you may like to visit:

Feedback on Yesterdays MATHS Learning:

Maths Feedback:

Q10 seemed to prove most tricky on the Step 1/2 task:

The key was to realise that the question was asking you to work out the boys which means finding 2/5.

45 / 5 = 9

9 x 2 = 18

On the Step 3/4 task, Q4 was answered incorrectly the most times:

You had to realise that the larger tower was a whole or 200/200. If the smaller tower is 1/200 of the size, it makes sense the larger tower is 200/200 (all of it).

So an efficient mental way of working this out is:

30cm x 200 =

30cm x 2 = 60cm

60cm x 100 = 6000cm

6000cm = 6m   (100cm in a metre so divide by 100)

Today's Home Learning:

Reading Solutions / Read Theory (Y5)- 1 comprehension (minimum)

English and Science - pjn

Maths - nmd

Writing/Spellings – I have posted two new discussions with your weekly spellings and your writing task. Remember these are both due in on Friday.

SPAG Support:

I have attached a video to the bottom of this blog post. This will help you with your Task 1 - Using the perfect verb form.

MATHS Support

Task 1: To convert decimals to fractions, use the place value of the least significant decimal to provide you with your denominator before simplifying.

E.g. 1

0.45

The 5 is in the hundredths (h). This means your denominator will be 100.

45/100

From here you can simplify. The highest common factor is 5. Divide both by 5.

=9/20.

E.g. 2

0.045

This time the 5 is in the thousandths.

so 45/1000 (don't need to include the zero in the tenths - doesn't add anything)

Divide both by 5 (highest common factor).

= 9/20

Task 2: To convert fractions to decimals, divide the numerator by the denominator - use a bus stop and add in the decimal point and extra zeros below if this helps.

Have a lovely day and stay safe,

Miss Fairhurst :)

Doves - 24th April - Home Learning

Date: 24th Apr 2020 @ 7:50am

Happy Friday Doves! I hope you’re all okay and still making the most of your time at home. Yesterday, I made some fudge (I’ve never made fudge before!), I’m obviously slightly biased... but it was great! Make sure to blog tomorrow, with some images if possible, so I can see what you have been up to this week.

Important information:

  1. During my daily checks of work, I have noticed some posts/comments which are unsuitable for the school learning platform. Please ensure you are activing sensibly and resposibly online at all times.
  2. In addition to this, there are children who are completing LBQ tasks 3 or 4 times. I understand that LBQ can sometimes kick you out (as you’re getting stuck into your work), but it is looking like children are restarting their work when they incorrectly answer a question. Getting questions wrong is part of the learning process, please keep going!
  3. Lastly, as mentioned in a post yesterday, we should be aiming to only attempt a question 3 times on LBQ. Over the week, I have seen some attempts of 10+.

If you're struggling, there are various things to do.

1. Post a comment on the blog and I will respond as soon as I can to support you.

2. Read the feedback carefully from LBQ, it provides you with tips and hints.

3. If you have access to the internet, look for examples online, tutorials through videos.

Today’s tasks will be as follows:

1.Reading Solutions or Read Theory: 1 comprehensions (minimum)

  1.   SPAG x3 – Code  - yjc
Task 1 - This is a pick and mix from all of your learning this week.                                       Task 2 – Spellings to support Doves class – ‘ture’                                                                        Task 3 – Spellings to support Eagles class                                                                          Everyone should complete task 1 and then either task 2/3 depending on your class and spellings.

3. Maths x2  - Code – yjm

4. Writing task and spellings                                                                                                                     Make sure you are complete your spelling test today – I can’t wait to see all of your score. I will be collecting this scores weekly and tracking them. Also, your writing is due in today, there are some great examples already on the blog so make sure you read them.

5. Happy Friday

Continuing with Doves Class tradition, I have set a 'Happy Friday' discussion (you can access/see this from your Pupil blog area). The theme is favourite board game.  Make sure you have a look and post your reply.

Keep safe and have a lovely weekend!

Miss Fairhurst

Doves/Eagles - SPAG Feedback

Date: 23rd Apr 2020 @ 4:26pm

Hi guys,

I can see from the LBQ analysis that most of us struggled with a few questions on the Active and Passive Voice Task.

I have added the examples below to talk through with you.

Understanding

It is imperative to remember that:

Active Voice -  When the subject is performing the action

e.g The cat was chasing the mouse . In this sentence the subject (cat) is chasing (performing).

Passive Voice - When the subject has something done to it.

e.g. The mouse was being chased. In this sentence, the subject (mouse) is being chased (having something done to it).

LBQ Examples:

Active voice - you are looking for an object who is performing an action.

How to recognise the active voice:
1. Find the subject (before the verb).
2. Check that the subject does the action.

Sentence 2 - The fairy dust helped the children to flu.
(The subject - fairy dust- is before the verb - helped-.)

How to recognise the active voice:
1. Find the subject (before the verb).
2. Check that the subject does the action.

Sentence 2 - Peter Pan showed the children where to land
(The subject - Peter Pan- is before the verb - showed-).

How to recognise the passive voice:
1. Find the subject (before the verb).
2. Check that the subject has something done to it.

Hint: Sometimes the word 'by' introduces the person doing the action in a passive sentence.

Sentence 4 - The children were seen flying over Neverland by the pirates.
(Subject - The Children- were seen flying).

Remember with LBQ we should be aiming to only attempt a question 3 times. I saw some attempts today which were extremely high.

If you're struggling, there are various things to do.
1. Post a comment on the blog and I will respond as soon as I can to support you.
2. Read the feedback carefully from LBQ, it provides you with tips and hints.
3. If you have access to the internet, look for examples online, tutorials through videos.

We can still use Brain, Buddy, Books even if we're not in the classroom :)

Doves - 23rd April - Home Learning

Date: 22nd Apr 2020 @ 10:52pm

Morning Lovelies! Hope you're all okay and enjoying the most of this sunshine! Today, I would LOVE to see more blogs posted (especially images which I can share) and an increase in Reading Solutions participation.

Today’s tasks will be as follows:

  1. Reading Solutions or Read Theory: 1 comprehensions (minimum) – I have been checking this daily and I can still see that children are not accessing Reading Solutions. This activity is a MUST Doves, you need to ensure you are completing it 5 times a week.
  2. SPAG x2 (This is a revision task to consolidate learning where we struggled) and Science - code - wgu
    Maths x2  - Code – kue
  3. Make sure you are practising your spellings (Friday is test day) and writing your letter to Captain Tom Moore (due in on Friday). We have 3 good examples which have all been submitted. Please ensure you read them to gain an understanding of the task :) Well done to Martha, Parthiv and Olly.

Eagles / Doves - Step 3/4 - Q23 Feedback

Date: 22nd Apr 2020 @ 8:08pm

Hi guys,

I can see Q23 on the Step 3/4 task proved a little trick for some of you today so I've modelled a couple of examples of how you could have reached the answer.

Method 1: Find fractions / %s of 220, add together and subtract from the total

Method 2: Convert all to %'s and find the left over %

Some more great work completed today! Well done Doves :)

Here is a summary of the fabulous work I've seen today:

LBQ:

Well done to Martha, Ruby and Amber who gained full marks on Task 1 - Proper, common and collective nouns.

Well done to Amber and Olly who gained full marks on Task 2 - Concrete and abstract

The number of children completing LBQ has dropped today. Please remember you must complete LBQ daily.

Read Theory:

Well done to Olly and Mollie who completed 5 reading quizzes! Super work, keep it up :)

IXL:

(Remember IXL is an additional option, LBQ, Reading Solutions, Writing and Spellings are compulsary).

Early Bird

My early bird worker for today was Ellis!

Writing Task:

So far, I have had 3 completed written tasks from Martha, Olly and Parthiv. Take some time to have a read of them. They are great examples and may give some of you some ideas on how to would like to structure yours and the content to include.

Doves - 22nd April - Maths Support

Date: 22nd Apr 2020 @ 9:52am

MATHS:

Starter:

When doubling the decimal, use your place value knowledge of x10 & /10.

e.g.

0.8 x 10 = 8

double 8 = 16

16 / 10 = 1.6

If struggling, you can always use a column method!

Step 2:

'When you do the same to the top and the bottom, equivalent fractions, you got em!'

In this example, the denominator has been multiplied by 7. Therefore, to make an equivalent fraction, we must also increase the numerator by multiplying it by 7 - the same has been done to both!

Doves - 22nd April - Home Learning

Date: 22nd Apr 2020 @ 7:49am

Good Morning Doves!

We’re halfway through the week and then it’s the weekend. I saw some absolutely brilliant home learning completed yesterday. Keep it up! I would love to see more of what you’re doing at home, so please make sure you are posting blogs (adding images if you can!). I’d love to be able to share them with everyone.

Today’s tasks will be as follows:

  1. Reading Solutions or Read Theory: 1 comprehensions (minimum) – The number of children accessng this has improved slightly. However, we need to continue to push with this, ensuring we are accessing it at least once a day. This is a compulsory task and must be completed.
  2. LBQ:
SPAG x2 and Science - code - xwv
    Maths x2  - Code – zgd
  3. Make sure you are practising your spellings (Friday is test day) and writing your letter to Captain Tom Moore (due in on Friday). As of yet, no one in Doves has completed this, however, I have attached a WAGOLL from Eagles class to support. Well done Phoebe :)

Doves - Learning Overview - 21.04.20

Date: 21st Apr 2020 @ 5:26pm

Well done Doves you have been busy today! 26/28 of you accessed LBQ which is the most we have had so far! I am so proud of all the hard work you are putting into your work. It is not easy and it certainly is strange, but its important to attempt to follow a structure and routine and work helps us to do that!

Here is a summary of the fabulous work I've seen today:

LBQ:

Well done to Akshay, Leon, Martha and Lucy who gained full marks on Task 1 - Using fronted adverbials

Well done to Amber, Akshay, Lucy, Thomas, Ruby and Olly who gained full marks on Task 2 - Adverbials to link paragraphs.

It is great to see so many of you doing it - keep it up, always remember to read the feedback.

Reading Solutions:

Well done to Mollie who has already read 3 comprehensions this week.

(Remember, the expectation is to complete 5 comprehensions. More children have completed this today, however still not enough. Make sure you are accessing this once a day).

Read Theory:

Well done to Oscar who completed 6 reading quizzes! Super work, keep it up :)

IXL:

Shout out to Leon, completing 372 questions in one day!

(Remember IXL is an additional option, LBQ, Reading Solutions, Writing and Spellings are compulsary).

Early Bird

My early bird worker for today was George!

Blogs:

Last but not least, I have another blog post to share with you today. Leon posted a blog detailing all the hard work he has done today. The expectation is that all children upload 1 blog per week.
