Year 6- Eagles: Blog items

Athletics Events

Date: 12th Nov 2020 @ 11:57am

Eagles had their first lesson in athletics on Monday.  They participated in a series of activies which develop their aerobic fitness: speed bounce, shuttle runs, skipping with ropes and the 200 metre run.  We will practise these over the next few weeks and add more two more activities.

Particular thanks must go to Dennis, Karson, Layton, Lucy and Paige as the activity organisers - they were timekeepers and made a record of each child's performance.

Remembrance Day

Date: 6th Nov 2020 @ 4:36pm

Eagles discussed why Remembrance Sunday is an important day in the calendar.  They also listened to a performance of The Last Post.  To create a special memory for this year, they carefully painted poppies and poppy fields using acrylic paint on pebbles.  Lovely work, Eagles!

French - numbers to 20 and greetings

Date: 28th Oct 2020 @ 7:38am

Eagles can now count from zero to twenty in French.  They also are great at greeting people and love to practise with Ben Shires.  If you want to practise over the holiday, go to this website:

Digital Citizenship - Electronic Screen Syndrome

Date: 16th Oct 2020 @ 11:27am

Eagles have learned that too much electronic screen time can affect their relationships, development and health.  They wrote emails to tell people about the affects of too much screen time and how to make changes.

Running a mile

Date: 9th Oct 2020 @ 8:31pm

Eagles class continues to keep their fitness levels up by running, walking or jogging for a mile around our playground.  The fastest racers this week were Oscar, Akshay, Gracie and Martha.

Music: reading rhythms

Date: 9th Oct 2020 @ 8:21pm

Eagles had a great Music lesson earlier this week.  They learned how to read 1, 2 and 4 beat (counts) notes.  To push the children, they were asked to read the music and clap the correct rhythms whilst keeping in time with a drum beat.

The children also listened to Adele's version of Make You Feel My Love.  They discussed the instruments they could hear and learned that it was a ballad.

Creating an artistic background with mixed media

Date: 2nd Oct 2020 @ 5:46pm

Eagles were busy this afternoon creating a background for a collage - taking their inspiration from the artist Robin Brooks.   They mixed watercolours to create the correct colour for their backgrounds and added pastel effects to create movement and interest.  Next week, Eagles will create a foreground for a collage.

Reading Challenge Winner

Date: 2nd Oct 2020 @ 3:54pm

Well done to this week's reading challenge winner! Super reading!

Eagles Star of the Week

Date: 2nd Oct 2020 @ 3:21pm

This person has been an absolute star this week! He has written a chillingly good ghost story and is always engaged and enthusiastic in class. Well done!

Cyberbullying

Date: 2nd Oct 2020 @ 11:19am

https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/13908828

We watched a Newsround video on cyberbullying and learned that people can experience bullying through comments on social media.  Our talking partners discussed feelings and who we should tell.  We also discussed whether we should say anything to the victim or bully.  Well done, Eagles!  You worked well with your partners and made great contributions to our lesson.

Science: developing our own dichotomous keys

Date: 1st Oct 2020 @ 9:09am

Eagles class had fun developing their own dichotomous keys today.

They practised question types with a game of guess who before working hard in groups to classify a variety of different sweets and chocolates. Using post-its and pens on tables really helped when we had to edit and improve our keys. Children then swapped with another group to test out if they could classify the sweets in the same way, and if all quaetions were clear.

Great work everyone,

Mr Simpson

Eagles - New Class Blog - 17.07.20

Date: 17th Jul 2020 @ 8:25am

Good morning Eaglets,

I can't quite believe this is the last transition blog! I have loved getting to know you all through these last two weeks, through your amazing work and through the zoom calls!

I hope that you all have a lovely summer, full of fun activities, laughter and memories! I can't wait to hear all about it in September, when we're finally all reunited.

Todays Task:

Interest/Passion Project

Today, you are continuing with your interest/passion project. Remember to do this based on something you are passionate about or extremely interested. This could be a hobby, a person, a place, animal etc. I want you to do as much research about it as possible and present it to me in a way that can best teach me about your chosen subject.

Here is an example from someone who did a project on China.

I can't wait to see the end results!

Have a great day,

Mr Simpson

Good morning!

Happy Thursday Stock Illustrations – 1,329 Happy Thursday Stock ...

Well done to those of you who completed the aspirations work yesterday - you all have some really interesting career ideas. Only two more days to go for this school year - are any of you doing anything nice this summer?

Today's task - Interest/Passion Project

For the next two days, I would like you to create a project on something you are passionate about or extremely interested. This could be a hobby, a person, a place, animal etc. I want you to do as much research about it as possible and present it to me in a way that can best teach me about your chosen subject.

Here is an example from someone who did a project on China.

I love all sports - Rugby and Arsenal FC in particular. If I were to choose, I would do a project on the British and Irish Lions rugby team.  My favourite player ever was Willie John McBride!

Ulster Rugby | The legend Willie John at 80

I'm looking forward to seeing what your interests are.

Have a great day.

Eagles - New class big - 15.07.20

Date: 15th Jul 2020 @ 8:22am

Good morning everyone,

We're already on Wednesday! Can you believe it? Our transition days are flying by.

Once again, I loved seeing all of your work from yesterday! Your houses were impressive and I could see you put a lot of thought into them (even picking the colour schemes!). I have attached some photos to share the work of your classmates so you can see what their houses looked like too!

Mr Griffiths and I have loved our Zoom chats with you this week and learning more about you. Thank you to those who joined, it was lovely to see you all.

Last message, WELL DONE! Mr Horsley posted the results of the sports week and WE WON!!!

You worked so hard last week and completed so many activities. You should be so proud of yourself, I know I am!

Todays Task:

Today's task is about  aspirations.

I would like you to create me a piece of work in your own format about:

- What you would like to be when you are older?

- Why you would like to do this?

- How are you going to achive this. Think about what subjects you will need to excel in at school and if you will need to go to University? Will you need to do an apprenticeship? etc.

This website could help you.

https://www.firstcareers.co.uk/

Remember that you might not know what you want to do right now and that is ok. You might also change your mind in the future. I always wanted to be a teacher because my Grandad was an excellent teacher, but I also considered joining the Navy, being an engineer amongst a lot of other things.

Date: 14th Jul 2020 @ 9:10am

Good morning Eaglets!

I had great fun on the Zoom meetings with some of you yesterday - I am looking forward to the next one already and I am really looking forward to starting our new class in September. Well done again to everyone who completed the transition task yesterday.

Today's task

I saw that Year 3/4 had done this task yesterday and the results looked amazing therefore I thought I would magpie it for you to try today.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Build, draw or paint your dream house. Perhaps it’s a castle or a tree house. Maybe it is as tall as the sky and has a slide for you to reach the bottom. Write 5 sentences about your house to tell us more about it. Talk about the colour, the rooms, the height, the size …. anything you like! Don’t forget to blog them when you have finished.

For me, I would definitely have to have lots of green house plants, a darts board, an indoor football pitch and a huge fish tank - maybe I could put some sharks in there.

Here are some examles from Y3/4

Have a fantastic day everyone!

Eagles - New Class Blog - 13.07.20

Date: 13th Jul 2020 @ 8:29am

Happy Monday everyone - not long to go until it is officially the summer holidays. I hope you all enjoyed a nice weekend. What did you all get up to? I put up a gate on the side of my house yesterday and went for a walk through Haigh Hall (then watched Arsenal get beat - but we're not mentioning that!).

Zoom calls start for some of you today - remember to change your display name to your first name so I can make sure it is you and let you into the meetinglaugh.

Mr Horsley will also be totting up the Health and Fitness Week scores today to see which class has been crowned the winners. The winners will be posted later in the day.

Today’s task:

Today I would like you to complete a book review about your favourite book from yesterday. Use a piece of A4 paper. Draw a picture and write the title of your book in the centre. Then, around the outside, use bubbles, sections or clouds to tell me about the characters, setting, the main events and why you like it.

When you have finished, colour it in!

Here is an example from Y3/4 -

You could also use the template attached below.

Have a great day everyone,

Mr Simpson

Good morning everyone - Happy Friday!

A message from Mr Horsley:

I was really impressed once again with the amazing work that has been submitted over the past few days. I am really looking forward to our PE lessons next year already after looking at the wonderful responses to Health and Fitness Week. I saw some interesting 'Horizontal Rock Climbing' pictures yesterday - I hope you all enjoyed it!

Today's task -

What is your favourite book?  Do you have a book that you could recommend to another one of your friends in our new class?

Your task is to draw a picture of the cover of your favourite book and give it a bit of colour. Leave a short review to let me know why you enjoyed it so much. Have a look at this example:

“This is my favourite book and as a child, my Dad would read this to me, the words in it are a little tricky! I loved the story and plots about adventures and battles and beasts and heroes! I particularly love the way JRR Tolkien describes the landscapes and setting!”

Task 2:

I would also like you to think about 5 things that you are most looking forward to next year. You can record this however you like: pictures, a poster or just written notes. I think next year will be a fantastic one and I hope that you are looking forward to it as much as I am.

Health and Fitness Week:

Health and Fitness week is coming to an end so let's put in extra effort before the weekend. A survey will be sent out today for you to submit your final scores for the Home Olympics. Make sure you read the Health and Fitness blog post I will post later to see what challenges I have set you for the day.

Have a great day and weekend everyone.

Your Work:

It has been a pleasure to see all of your transition work so far! You are so motivated and hard working and I am super impressed. Well done!!

Good Morning Eagles!

Todays Tasks:

Today's tasks focus on wellbeing, our Growth Mindset and goals for the future.

Task 1

Throughout lockdown, you have all shown how motivated and determined you are to continue with your work, showing a consistent Growth Mindset. Today, I would like you to create a poster all about Growth Mindset. Think about how you can have a  growth mindset and what you can say to motivate yourself. Also, think about the flipside of this and what would be negative things that could be said in the same situation. Here is an example:

Task 2:

  1. Think about your goals for next year – what would you like to achieve? Split a piece of paper into two columns and label them ‘goals’ and ‘actions’. Think about what your goals and what actions you will need to make to achieve them.

Here is an example:

Good morning future Eagles!

Well done to all of you who posted your 'All about me' posters yesterday. I knew quite a bit already about most of you, but there was definitely some new information and a few surprises in there!

Today's task:

We are in the Eagles class. What can you find out about Eagles? Search on the Internet or look in a book and find out what you can about this wonderful bird. Then present your findings. You could draw a picture of an Eagle, write a paragraph or some sentences about them, brainstorm facts or make a fact file.

One interesting fact about Eagles is that there are over 60 different species of eagle.

Remember to keep any work you complete, all of our work on Eagles will go on the front door of our classroom :)
