In science, we conducted some research into all the planets using a range of sources off the internet and through a range of non-fiction books. We also learned about the background information as to why Pluto was declassified and demoted to a dwarf planet.
Here are some of the interesting facts we learnt today:
– Jupiter has poisonous clouds with drops of acid that would burn your skin.
– Mars has the largest volcano in the Solar System (three times as high as Mount Everest) – Venus is the hottest planet despite Mercury being the closest to the Sun. – Neptune is sometimes further away from the Sun than Pluto.

This morning, children from a Eagles class shared their home achievements with each other. We had trampolining, dancing, martial arts, swimming and ‘guiding’.

After our Geography fieldwork trip, children got to do some very exciting maths today!
Using the ‘straight forward’ formula: Discharge (m3/s) = Cross Sectional Area (m2) x Velocity (m/s)
Children were able to use their knowledge of mean, measures, place value, multiplication and division to calculate the amount of water flowing through the river per second at the point we measured.

This week, Eagles class carried out some Geography fieldwork for Bolton Council at a nearby river. We took a number of measurements whilst we were there in order to work out the amount of water that flowed through the river (total discharge) per cubic meter per second. The council had asked us to monitor this due to the rising number of floods recently.

In Music, we continued to learn the song ‘Make you feel my love’. We learnt about the terms: pulse, rhythm and pitch and found these by clapping the rhythm and copying the riffs on the Glockenspiel.

Eagles Class braved the cold and created their own river systems in Geography this week. They gathered resources to use on their slope and predicted the route that their river would take. Children were able to describe observations using key vocabulary such as erosion, deposition, meander, delta, source, levee, mouth and even spotted some potential oxbow lakes in their systems!

Science – Soluble or Insoluble?

Eagles spent this afternoon trying to identify whether a range of materials were soluble (they dissolve in liquid) or insoluble (they don’t dissolve in liquid). The children were really sensible and they were great at predicting which materials would be soluble or insoluble, though they were surprised to discover that all of our experiments this afternoon produced changes that were reversible. Next week we will discuss this concept further as we talk about filtering and evaporation as a means of separating solutions and mixtures.

In topic, we started our unit, ‘what happens to a raindrop?’. To help us answer this question, we learnt all about the features of a water cycle, learning specific technical vocabulary before applying this when creating our own water cycle in a bag.

This afternoon, Year 6 continued with their problem based learning in PE and made a giant Art Attack of the Titanic using only their bodies. Team leaders made decisions and organised the other children with no help from an adult! One or two of the children did a little too good of a Mr Simpson impersonation at times!

Eagles enjoyed a great day at the Titanic Museum today! Children were able to build on their already impressive knowledge and left museum staff very impressed! The children really enjoyed the workshop and we had a great debate over who we would save from the Titanic – amazingly, Mrs Pal survived!

Today we were lucky enough to have the Fire Service visit us. They came to discuss how to stay safe on Halloween and Bonfire night.

Today, we became the passengers on board the RMS Titanic. We each received a boarding pass with the name of a real life passenger and their class. We watched video clips showing us the the difference between an evening in 1st class compared to 3rd class whilst learning about their use of facilities and their living conditions.
Through the use of drama and role play we experienced the different attitudes between classes, learning that the needs of the 1st class were always catered for.

Well done to those who prepared and confidently delivered a speech on why they should represent the children at The Gates at school councillor. The teachers were super impressed with the hard work that went into all the speeches.

This afternoon, we looked at the features of the Titanic. We discussed the building of the Titanic, where we learnt that The Titanic was the largest man made object to enter the sea and 15,000 people worked to build the Titanic!
We then delved deeper into the different types of rooms, looking at the differences between 1st, 2nd and 3rd class passengers. Based on our knowledge of this, we created rooms in a shoe box to demonstrate what it might have looked like.

This morning, Swallows Class and Eagles Class enjoyed exchanging their persuasive letters with each other. There was some great expression used when children were reading aloud and some very convincing arguments were made for the crayons to return! The Year 6’s really enjoyed working with the Year 3’s and were even able to support with some editing.

Welcome back! It’s been lovely getting to know the children this week and I already know we’re going to have a very good year!
This morning, Eagles enjoyed teaming up with Swallows class to read ‘The Day The Crayons Quit’.
And despite the age gap, both classes seemed to laugh loudest when listening to pink crayon’s letter!

Today we created tally charts. We randomly picked counters or cubes and tallied the colour. We then found the total.

Owls Class really enjoyed their Space Dancing this week. They became astronauts shooting into space then experienced gravity as they pretended to explore the moon.
