Science- Identifying the bones of a skeleton.
Date: 11th Mar 2020 @ 9:57am
During science this week we started with the question what is a skeleton? In pairs the children discussed this and were then asked which bones they could already name.
The class were shown a video featuring an informative song, and the children made notes of key facts.
The children enjoyed the game ‘five lives’ choosing a side of the classroom they thought was the correct answer. The winners were the last ones standing on question 10. From this they learnt the meaning of vertebrates and invertebrates, and the children were then able to identify different animals within these categories.
We then created skeleton puppets using paper fasteners so they could dance to the song in the video shown. As an extension the children began to label their skeletons using the information they had learnt.

Our homework wall is looking great! Another great piece of homework, with a picture of war medals and details of who obtained them and why. We also tasted some delicious oat cakes made from a WW2 recipe.

The children were learning about online safety during their ICT lesson on Wednesday. These children have written diary entries describing scenarios where children have had to go to their trusted adult for help with an online issue. These were very informative and showed the children really understood where to seek help with online issues.

The Woodpeckers are getting closer and closer to creating their very own broadcasts to communicate to the viewing public about the start of the war.
We have explored newspaper articles to gather information and facts. We have also investigated their structure to help us to understand all about the 5Ws (who, what, when, where and why).
Then, we worked in groups to start to plan our reports.

The Woodpecker class have blown Mrs Latham and Mrs Williams away this week with their topic homework which is beginning to come in from home.
We have received home baked orange biscuits made using a recipe from the war, information about relatives who experienced the war, medals, artefacts such as letters and postcards, posters, tanks and also poems and information sheets. Wow!!! Brilliant effort to these children for working so hard and for bringing in such fantastic work.
We look forward to seeing lots more over the coming weeks.

We have been busy in Maths exploring different numbers and how they are made up. We partitioned numbers using a range of different equipment to explore different ways that numbers can be split. We also explored decimals. As part of our learning, we also created our own images to help us to support our own learning in class.

The children used critical thinking and judgement to invade their rival country. As a class the children were split into two teams, the British and the Germans, to mimic their topic of WW2. The children had to breach enemy lines to retrieve the other country’s flag and return home. If the children were tagged by the opposition team they were sent to ‘war camp’.
As a cool down activity the children had to complete different actions to commands such as:
Bomb- The children had to jump in the air.
Attack-The children had to duck.
Dambuster-The children had to run with their arms out not touching anyone else.
Injured: The children had to hop on one leg.

WW2 Topic- Information Gathering
Date: 11th Mar 2020 @ 9:35am
This week the children have started their new Topic on World War 2. The children in groups were each given a subject to focus on eg/Vehicles, The Blitz, Food, People and Evacuation. The children using images and artifacts brainstormed ideas and their current knowledge. The children added these to a project sheet and as groups moved around the classroom adding more information to each one.
We discussed this as a class and gathered information that we already know. From this the children then ordered key events during WW2 and created a timeline. After this the children researched the key words and events to familiarise themselves with the topic.
