Newsround

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:55pm

This afternoon, to finish off our day we watched some newsround to learn about the world around us. We learnt about some of the key questions regarding the coronavirus and their answers. We also watched some Space news relating to our Science topic. We learnt about the upcoming events for Space this year as well as Lettuce being grown in the International Space Station.

World Book Day

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:55pm

We had a brilliant day today celebrating World Book Day!

We came to school dressed as a book character

We then spent the morning making our favourite book within a jar

After this, we then made a visit to Puffins class to read with the younger children.

Computing- Repeat

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:53pm

This week in Computing we focused on creating a repeat/loop. We discussed what it is and the purpose of it, primarily discussion how it is easier to group instructions as opposed to programming multiple individual instructions.

We developed our work of creating shapes from the previous week, by adapting it to include a repeat. We looked at creating: squares, hexagons, pentagons, heptagons and triangles. Even some maths! Looking at the size of interior angles.

Non Chronological

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:52pm

Today in English, we used the internet and books from the library to help us to find factual information and subject specific vocabulary which would help us in writing an informative and descriptive paragraph of our creature.

Kindness Week

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:51pm

In school, we celebrated kindness week, a week which is celebrated by individuals worldwide and encouraged to carry out random acts of kindness.

In class, we completed various activities for the week to help us celebrate this. We created kindness bingo sheets with a range of activities which we wanted to achieve by the end of the week. Further to this, we each chose a random name of a child and carried out random acts of kindness for at child, one of them being creating a certificate to celebrate positives of that child.

We then presented these certificates to each other.

Topic Homework

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:50pm

Wow we already have a range of topic homework completed: research of street art, informative posters on some of South America’s countries, a model of a high rise building and a biography of a footballer.

Well Done!

Locating the countries in South America

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:48pm

Today we started our new Geography topic on South America. We started by initially discussing our enquiry questions ’How does life in South America differ to yours?’. Following on from this, we learnt about the location of South America, specifically understanding that it’s a continent and is occupied by 12 countries. We used this information to locate the countries on a map.

What makes Britain great?

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:48pm

This week our Big Question was ‘What makes Britain great?’.

As a class, we discussed what makes Britain unique. We discussed how from Britain there have been a range of successful ideas/people: Musicians, inventors, authors. We also discussed some well known landmarks such as Big Ben and Stonehenge, whilst understanding the importance of the care and funding we receive in Britain through the likes of the NHS and Education.

Here is what we thought:

100 Book Challenge

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:47pm

Here is one of our entries towards the 100 Book challenge – reading a book in a unique place!

This child decided to take her book to the Zoo. As you can see – both parties are equally enjoying the book. Well done! 🙂

Safer Internet Day

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:46pm

Today in Computing we focused on the theme of Safer Internet Day: Managing our online identity. We discussed how sometime we alter our identities by changing profile pictures, creating avatars and even changing our names to create usernames. We discussed the reasons behind this and our perceptions of ourselves and others online.

As part of a task, we then created a picture of ourselves demonstrating our online identity vs our real identify and the reasons behind the difference.

Sequencing

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:43pm

This week in Computing our focus has been on sequencing. Sequencing is the term used to describe a set of instructions that must be carried out in a particular order, changes to the sequence will change the outcome.

To help us to implement this skill we looked at creating shapes on Scratch and 2Logo using a sequence.

Topic Homework

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:40pm

Wow! We have had some great entries for our Earth and Space Science Homework. Well done to those who have worked hard at home to create something!

Democracy and Voting

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:40pm

This week in Big Question we have been learning all about Democracy and the importance of voting. We learnt that Democracy is when the people (us) have a say on how the government is run, we have a say through voting.

To replicate, the children were given the say to vote on who they think we should raise money for next: Australian Bushfires or Sports Relief. Children were given a ballot paper and were informed of ho to register their vote correctly before putting it in the ballot box.

Playdough, Lego and Sacrifices

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:36pm

Yesterday in History, Doves Class played with Lego and Playdough! Not because the children dearly miss their days in EYFS, well not only that, but to learn about Ancient Maya settlements. Children constructed their own settlements, including pyramids, temples, plazas, ball courts and markets.

As well as this, children took part in a game of Pok-ta-Pok. They used only their forearms, thighs and hips to control the ball. The winning team (the ones who hit the ball into the hoop) would usually be rewarded by being sacrificed to the Gods; however, on this occasion we didn’t stick to tradition.

Exploring Scratch

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:35pm

Today in Computer we explored the programme Stratch 3. We looked at the interface of Scratch, becoming familiar with the tools provided and how to use and adapt them.

Modelling the solar system

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:34pm

Today in Science, we created a scale model of the Solar System. We began by recapping our knowledge of the planets from the previous week including their distances and sizes, before choosing which fruit represented the planet and comparing it with our peers.

Following on from this, we then worked in groups to work out a scale model – applying our mathematical knowledge.

Once we had accumulated all of the information, we began to create a scale model of the solar system demonstrating the distances.

Persuasive letter

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:33pm

Over the past two weeks the children have been working hard learning how to write a persuasive letter.  Throughout the two weeks, they have gained an understanding of the features and worked on developing their skills which could later be embedded.

Today, after a lesson on editing yesterday, they wrote up their final drafts!

Understanding how to write a simple program

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:32pm

In Computing, we began by discussing the difference between an algorithm and a program.

We discussed how an algorithm is a sequence of instructions (forward, left, forward) needed to complete a task whereas a program is precise instructions needed to complete an algorithm (forward 10, turn left 90 degrees)

During the lesson, we split into two groups. One group worked with myself looking at programming the beet it. We discussed the use of the buttons and the importance of clearing previous instructions as the bee bot retains these. We verbalised the program before  inputting them.

Whilst some of us were working with the Beebots, the rest of the children were inputting programs on Purple Mash.

Home Acheivements

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:31pm

This week in Big Question, we looked at the achievements of our peers outside of school. It was great to see so many achievements. We have a: dancer, actor, footballer, a member of brownies, a runner and a keen reader! Well done!

Star of the week

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:26pm

Well done to our Star who has shown determination, resilience and perseverance to all maths challenges with a smile!

Planets in our solar system

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:24pm

In science, we conducted some research into all the planets using a range of sources off the internet and through a range of non-fiction books. We also learned about the background information as to why Pluto was declassified and demoted to a dwarf planet.

Here are some of the interesting facts we learnt today:

– Jupiter has poisonous clouds with drops of acid that would burn your skin.
– Mars has the largest volcano in the Solar System (three times as high as Mount Everest)                         – Venus is the hottest planet despite Mercury being the closest to the Sun.                                                        – Neptune is sometimes further away from the Sun than Pluto.

Algorithms

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:23pm

Today in Computing we looked at algorithms (a sequence of instructions or rules that are followed to complete a task).

Firstly, we went outside as ‘Human Robots’, our task was to follow the algorithms presented in the correct way e.g. Forward 5. We discussed what would happen if the algorithms are not presented in the correct manner.

Following on from this, we applied our understanding of algorithms in a computational manner on Purple Mash.

Features of a persuasive letter

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 3:23pm

Today we worked in pairs to analyse the features of a persuasive letter.
