 Reading in Summer term

 

 At The Gates we view reading as important because it     develops our thoughts, gives us endless knowledge and   lessons to read while keeping our minds active. Reading   books can help us learn, understand and develop knowledge   and expand our vocabulary and thinking skills.

With this in mind, we feel it vital that children continue to read regularly whilst school is partially closed. We recommend the following ways in which your children can engage with books online:

Read Theory – all year groups have usernames and passwords for this

Reading Solutions – Y5 will now have access to this, usernames and passwords will be sent out

Oxford Owls – here the children can access books which are appropriate for their level of reading. This is the company that we use for our home readers, so children will know their book band colour and should find books perfect for them. We have added a link on the school website to take you straight to the Oxford Owls website page. This can be found under the ‘Curriculum’ tab, then click on ‘Reading information.’ Once you reach the Oxford Owls website, you then just need to click on ‘Levels’ and then ‘Book Band’ to choose the books that are suitable for your child (you may need to create a free login).

Reading Information for Parents

At The Gates we have a structured approach to the teaching of reading which aims to develop confident readers who love reading a wide range of texts.

We teach phonics initially to help children develop decoding skills so that they can quickly learn to read books independently. Phonics is taught using Letters & Sounds. Children are grouped according to their ability to ensure learning and progression at an appropriate level and pace. Phonics is taught through a mixture of interactive games, puzzles, reading, rhymes, actions, letter formation & writing. Children learn the phonemes & corresponding graphemes & apply them to a variety of situations. Learning phonics is supported through homework.

Alongside the teaching of phonics, we share books across school as a class, in groups and individually. All year groups visit the local library and we encourage pupils to take school library books home alongside their individual reading books.

Children are supported across school to develop their reading skills and the level of support given depends on the needs of each child. In addition, we have older children who are trained as reading buddies to support younger children. A group of trained volunteers also support our children on a regular basis by sharing books and promoting good reading habits.
