Eco Team

Here at The Gates, we take great pride in our role as part of the Eco Team. We are currently on our way to achieving 'Green Flag' status for our school and are undertaking as many projects as possible to support our three main aims against the 'Seven Steps' criteria. Our main focus' this year are: Biodiversity, Litter and School Grounds. This will help to support our peers by keeping our environment clean, and forming good links for Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC).

We promise to work together to change the way we think about our school environment and subsequently the Earth, growing this idea into the wider community of Westhoughton and Bolton

Our Aims

• Ensure that our work improves the environment of our school and it's place in the Westhoughton community.
• Increase everyone's awareness of sustainability and climate change.
• Undertake projects that make a difference to the school ground and that of the local community.

Latest Update

The Eco committee has reviewed ways to improve our school environment and then created an action plan outlining how we will meet the Eco-Schools ‘Seven Steps’ on our journey towards becoming a Green Flag accredited school. Our aim is to achieve the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award over the course of the next academic year.

As part of this work, we are currently undertaking research for the Food Waste Topic Toolkit, exploring the impact of food waste on our environment and identifying practical ways to reduce waste across our school. Pupils are investigating where food waste comes from, how it affects the planet, and what changes we can make to encourage more sustainable habits both in school and at home. This research will help inform our future Eco-Schools actions and support us in working towards our Green Flag accreditation.
