Year 5 - Kingfishers: Blog items

Kingfishers Home Learning 16th July

Date: 16th Jul 2020 @ 8:35am

Good morning!

Happy Thursday Stock Illustrations – 1,329 Happy Thursday Stock ...

Well done to those of you who completed the aspirations work yesterday - you all have some really interesting career ideas. Only two more days to go for this school year - are any of you doing anything nice this summer?

Today's task - Interest/Passion Project

For the next two days, I would like you to create a project on something you are passionate about or extremely interested. This could be a hobby, a person, a place, animal etc. I want you to do as much research about it as possible and present it to me in a way that can best teach me about your chosen subject.

Here is an example from someone who did a project on China.

I love travelling, music, sport and trying new food. I have unfortunately always been a big Blackburn Rovers fan and watch the games as often as I can.

25 years on from Blackburn's greatest day, a Premier League title ... But if I were to choose, I would do a project on American Football - I'd choose this because it is not as popular as football. I love all sports really but I have been passionate about American Football for a long time, and like Mr Dean, I used to play for a while in my younger years . I especially like the team the Green Bay Packers and I hope to go there in the future. My favourite player is (the greatest Quarterback of all time) Aaron Rodgers - it is worth watching his highlights on YouTube! You will often see me wearing their t-shirts and jumpers on PE days! Let me know what you are passionate about!

Aaron Rodgers and his offensive line at Lambeau in the snow ...

I'm excited to hear what you are interested in.

Have a great day.

Mr Horsley.

Kingfishers Home Learning 15th July

Date: 15th Jul 2020 @ 8:35am

Good morning Kingfishers -

It's nice to see the wonderful July weather has made an appearance again this morning...

Make sure you all check out the Sports Day Results blog I posted yesterday if you haven't already.

Today's task

Today's task is about  aspirations.

I would like you to create a piece of work in your own format about:

- What you would like to be when you are older?

- Why you would like to do this?

- How are you going to achieve this. Think about what subjects you will need to excel in at school and if you will need to go to university? Will you need to do an apprenticeship? etc.

This website could help you.

https://www.firstcareers.co.uk/

Remember that you might not know what you want to do right now and that is ok. You might also change your mind in the future. I always wanted to be a teacher because my Grandad was an excellent teacher, but I also considered joining the Navy, being an engineer amongst a lot of other things.

SPORTS WEEK RESULTS........

Date: 14th Jul 2020 @ 9:48am

I have counted up the overall scores for this years Home Olympics. The results were very close, so many of you took part and there were some amazing scores from pupils and parents across the school. The overall winners have been decided on the class which had the highest participation from its pupils.

This years winners are....

Well done to Mr Simpson and his new Eagles class!

Fifa Forum Tournament (9) — FIFA Forums

Some indiviudal winners include -

Well done to everyone who took part - you all posted excellent scores and it is important to take into consideration to range of ages across school. Use it as motivation to train and try even harder for next time. If you are somebody who feels disappointed when you do not win, remember that it is OK to feel this way. What is important is how you react to this. You should always show dignity in defeat, congratulate the winner or winners and use your disappointment to motivate you next time. Every single professional athlete will have experienced defeat at some point in their life, especially in their younger years, and if you ask many of them they will tell you how much losing can help motivate them to succeed in the future.

Kingfishers Home Learning - 14th July

Date: 14th Jul 2020 @ 8:27am

Good morning Kingfishers!

I had great fun on the Zoom meetings with some of you yesterday - I am looking forward to the next one already and I am really looking forward to starting our new class in September. Well done again to everyone who completed the transition task yesterday.

Today's task

I saw that Year 3/4 had done this task yesterday and the results looked amazing therefore I thought I would magpie it for you to try today.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Build, draw or paint your dream house. Perhaps it’s a castle or a tree house. Maybe it is as tall as the sky and has a slide for you to reach the bottom. Write 5 sentences about your house to tell us more about it. Talk about the colour, the rooms, the height, the size …. anything you like! Don’t forget to blog them when you have finished.

'

For me, I would definitely have to have lots of green house-plants, a darts board, an indoor football pitch and a huge fish tank - maybe I could put some sharks in there.

Here are some examles from Y3/4

Have a fantastic day everyone!

Mr Horsley

Kingfishers Home Learning 13th July

Date: 13th Jul 2020 @ 8:18am

Happy Monday everyone - not long to go until it is officially the summer holidays. I hope you all enjoyed a nice weekend. What did you all get up to? I went on a nice bike ride and watched some football on Saturday.

Zoom calls start for some of you this morning - remember to change your display name to your first name so I can make sure it is you and let you into the meetinglaugh.

I will also be totting up the Health and Fitness Week scores today to see which class has been crowned the winners. I will post the results later in the day.

Today’s task:

Today I would like you to complete a book review about your favourite book from yesterday. Use a piece of A4 paper. Draw a picture and write the title of your book in the centre. Then, around the outside, use bubbles, sections or clouds to tell me about the characters, setting, the main events and why you like it.

When you have finished, colour it in!

Here is an example from Y3/4 -

You could also use the template attached below.

Have a great day everyone,

Mr Horsley

HEALTH AND FITNESS WEEK - DAY 5

Date: 9th Jul 2020 @ 6:51pm

Today will be our last day of the Virtual Health and Fitness Week - in my opinion it's the best one yet. I would like to start by thanking all of you who participated and challenged yourself this week. I have honestly been blown away by how many people participated this week and I hope that you have all had fun. Hopefully, some of you may have taken something from this week that has inspired you to try and make every week a Health and Fitness week in the future!

Activities for today

1) Let's get warmed up with a 5 minute workout from Joe.

If you are feeling an extra challenge - you could try one of his full workouts on the link below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3m5DlVnxLjk

2) Activity Bingo - today is your last day to finish the activity bingo - can you get gold?

3) Balloon Tennis -

Challenge someone in your house to a game of balloon tennis! I used two chairs and tied a piece of string to make a net. If not, a piece of string, ribbon, scrunched up t-shirt etc. would do the job! Try not to let the balloon land on your side of the 'net'!

Extra challenge - tie an old rag or dishcloth into a knot and use that as a slightly heavier 'ball'. You could use an even heavier pair of socks for an even harder challenge!

Water Bucket Shuttle Run

I saw this idea on Twitter and thought this would be great fun. Get two buckets, one empty and one full. Place them at opposite ends of the your garden. See how much water can you transport to the other in 5 minutes. Measure the water you have transported at the end and let me know how you got on - I am going to give this a go tomorrow! (A bit of Maths involved in there for you too Mr Simpson!)

Home Olympics - Final Event

In my opinion - the hardest yet! They may look simple but this is a very tiring activity which will test your core stregth and stamina. This is a core activity that many professional athletes do daily to help keep them super fit and healthy.

The task is to see how many you can do in one minute.

Have a rest in between and try this 3-5 times to see how high you can get your score!

There will be a survey sent out on School Spider later today to submit your final scores for the week. Then we can see which class has won this years Home Olympics!

Have a great day everyone. I hope you enjoy the activities planned. Send in your pictures and videos for me to check out and repost.

Kingfishers Home Learning 10th July

Date: 9th Jul 2020 @ 6:12pm

Good morning everyone - Happy Friday!

I was really impressed once again with the amazing work that has been submitted over the past few days. I am really looking forward to our PE lessons next year already after looking at the wonderful responses to Health and Fitness Week. I saw some interesting 'Horizontal Rock Climbing' pictures yesterday - I hope you all enjoyed it!

Today's task -

What is your favourite book?  Do you have a book that you could recommend to another one of your friends in our new class?

Your task is to draw a picture of the cover of your favourite book and give it a bit of colour. Leave a short review to let me know why you enjoyed it so much. Have a look at this example:

“This is my favourite book and as a child, my Dad would read this to me, the words in it are a little tricky! I loved the story and plots about adventures and battles and beasts and heroes! I particularly love the way JRR Tolkien describes the landscapes and setting!”

Task 2:

I would also like you to think about 5 things that you are most looking forward to next year. You can record this however you like: pictures, a poster or just written notes. I think next year will be a fantastic one and I hope that you are looking forward to it as much as I am.

Health and Fitness Week:

Health and Fitness week is coming to an end so let's put in extra effort before the weekend. A survey will be sent out today for you to submit your final scores for the Home Olympics. Make sure you read the Health and Fitness blog post I will post later to see what challenges I have set you for the day.

Have a great day and weekend everyone.

Kingfishers Home Learning 9th July

Date: 9th Jul 2020 @ 8:09am

Good morning Kingfishers,

Throwback Thursday  - Guess Who!

Today is Thursday which means there will be another 'Throwback Thursday - Guess Who' posted to the Whole School blog page (School Website > School blogs > School Blog).

Make sure you have a look and cast your guess as to who you think the little person grew up to be! I can't wait to see your responses.

Your Work:

I've been really impressed with all of the work you have submitted so far. I've also seen some excellent effort with your Health and Fitness week work which is fantastic to see.

Todays Tasks:

Activity 1:

For the task today, I would like you all to, Using an outline of a face, draw the aspects of Year 5/6 that you are looking forward to e.g. clubs, lessons, trips etc.

Here is an example:

Some of Miss Fairhurst's Year 6's did this yesterday, they drew what they were excited about for High School. This is what they did:

If you check the bottom of Miss Fairhurst's blog, she has attached a template that you might want to use. Alternatively, you could just draw your own outline - either is fine!

Health and Fitness Week:

Make sure to have a look at Mr Horsley's blog post on the main page to see what your task is for today!

Enjoy your day,

Mr Horsley

Good Morning Kingfishers!

Todays Tasks:

Today's tasks focus on wellbeing, our Growth Mindset and goals for the future.

Task 1

Throughout lockdown, you have all shown how motivated and determined you are to continue with your work, showing a consistent Growth Mindset. Today, I would like you to create a poster all about Growth MindsetThink about how you can have a  growth mindset and what you can say to motivate yourself. Also, think about the flipside of this and what would be negative things that could be said in the same situation. Here is an example:

Task 2:

  1. Think about your goals for next year – what would you like to achieve? Split a piece of paper into two columns and label them ‘goals’ and ‘actions’. Think about what your goals and what actions you will need to make to achieve them.

Here is an example:

Health and Fitness Week:

Today’s activity is Yoga. Click the link below and follow the moves!

Over the next two weeks, I will be setting you some taks to complete at home so I can learn lots more about you! Anything that you complete at home, please blog it - I would love to read and see them all. I would love for you to bring them in in September so that I can display them in class so make sure to keep them safe :)

Getting to know each other:

This week, I will be ringing home to say Hi! This will be a great chance for you to ask any questions which you may have. Next week, I wll also meet with you all over zoom. If you haven't had an email with a date and time, please mention this when I call.

Today's Task:

Today I would like you to create a poster all about you! You could put a picture in the middle and create sections about your family, your hobbies, your favourite things and anything else that you would like to share.

Here are some examples to help you out!

Take a picture and blog your poster when you have finished. Remember, we need to keep safe online so we don’t want any personal details on the blog.

Here is a little bit about me:

- I love travelling to new places and trying new things, I always try to visit a different place each year. My favourite places I have been so far is Japan. I loved it there.

- My birthday is on the 19th February

- I live in a village called Wheelton near Chorley, have one younger sister and my Mum and Dad live in the Isle of Man so I visit there regularly.

- I love all sport - I watch Blackburn Rovers football team a lot and I also love American Football.

Kingfishers Home Learning - 3rd July 2020

Date: 3rd Jul 2020 @ 9:03am

Good morning Kingfishers!

Today will be the last time that we will blog as our current class. I would like to say thankyou to each and every one of you for making me feel so welcome in your class when I returned in January. Your behaviour and attitude has been excellent since Day 1 and, although I have had the opportunity to see some of you again in school recently, it was such a shame that our school year together was ended so abruptly just when I felt we were hitting our stride. For a lot of you, it was my first time teaching you this year and its been a pleasure to get to know you all personally. I feel that you have all matured and achieved so much this year and you have set good foundations to continue to strive in next year. I know that Mr Griffiths shares the same sentiment towards you as a class and he, as someone who has been in class from the start of the school year, often tells me how immensely proud he is of your progress this year. I'd also like to say a huge thankyou to all the parents for the hard work that you have put in, not only over the past few months during lockdown, but over the course of the school year. Our home reading and homework participation all year has been consistently amazing and this speaks volumes about the support that you given. The children and I have really have benefitted massively from your support.

Children - the good news is that we will all get to see each other again next year as a Year 6 team at some point or another and I look forward to seeing you all again as soon as possible.

So, moving forward...

Star of the Week

So many of you are impressing staff consistently with you effort and application recently, making this a difficult decision as always. There are also some of you could easily be given this award every week due to your commitment to your work. However, this week's award goes to......Lucy

Both myself and Mr Dean have noticed how hard Lucy has been working recently and she approaches every day with a huge smile on her face. Her positivity is infectious and she has a great sense of humour - she is a great person to be around. Mr Dean and I have chosen Lucy this week for her attitude in PE. She has stood out in recent athletics lessons with Mr Dean and has shown real talent. Well done Lucy!

Good morning everyone!

There has been some superb work completed over the past few days - I am really impressed with some of your efforts. I really enjoyed this piece of writing from last week by Esmee in particular.

Here are Zac's wonderful instructions on how to catch a dragon! I can tell he has worked really hard on this.

Here are Fletchers instructions, he is producing excellent work consistently at the moment! I am really impressed.

I did log on to check how many people had logged onto Reading Solutions and I was slightly disappointed with how many daily readers we have had in Kingfishers so far (there are still people yet to log on at all - I can seeeeeee youuuuuuwink). Reading Solutions is a fantastic program and we are lucky to be the only year group in school to use it currently - we need to make the most of itsmiley.

Kingfishers Star of the Week

Date: 19th Jun 2020 @ 8:29am

I'd like to start off by saying that I find choosing an individual Star of the Week very difficult as there are so many of you working incredibly hard all day, every day. There are many of you consistently pushing and challenging yourself to be the best you can be, both at home and in school.

However, this week I have chosen Fletcher for Star of the Week. Fletcher could have had this award every week for his commitment and consistency with his home learning. This week, he has stood out to me for using technology (in particular Seesaw) to demonstrate and record his learning. I know he has been working very hard at home and deserves this award. Well done Fletcher!

Make sure you all keep an eye oput for Golden Book nominations and I wish you all a great weekend.

Kingfishers Home Learning

Date: 19th Jun 2020 @ 8:20am

Happy Friday everyone!

After feedback from parents, teachers and children – we have decided to freshen up our home learning routine. LBQ will still be used but less so than previously. In its place, we will be using National Oak Academy to provide online teaching which will provide more support to your children whilst providing a wider range of subjects. Daily links will be provided for all lessons. Once on the site, most lessons start with a quick introductory quiz, followed by a teaching video, followed by an activity and a recap quiz.

Reading:

Year 5 will now have a reading solutions login. You will need to visit https://readingsolutionsuk.co.uk/ and login.

Site code: RPTHEGA

Your username and password will follow the same format – First name and Initial with the password ‘qwerty’.

For example ThomasD – qwerty

All Year 5's please ensure you're accessing this daily!

Year 6 children please complete your LBQ reading task and a comprehension on Read Theory.
