This morning the Woodpeckers have been busy identifying the multiples of 11 and 12, exploring patterns and using visual resources to make up the multiples in groups. Some children developed their learning further by multiplying the multiples by 10 or 100 therefore creating answers with 4 or 5 digits.

Today the Woodpecker class have been very productive writing some incredible narratives. We used Excitable Edgar as our stimulus but created our own characters and settings to create our own stories.
Mrs Latham was amazed by the description and detail used.

The children learnt facts about air raid shelters including what they were made from and where they were built. The children then designed their shelters considering the structure and materials they would use to protect a lego family from wind, water and cold.
The children began making their air raid shelters.
We then discussed challenges they faced when making them and what they would change next time to improve them.

In Maths, we have started to multiply and divide numbers by 10 and 100. We used place value headings and made the ‘digits dance’ to show how they move when they are multiplied or divided by 10 or 100.

Todays P.E lesson was inspired by the cold weather. The children worked as a team in relay to collect all of their equipment cards.
They then used communication, speed and agility to collect their equipment needed for the task.
Once the equipment was collected the children in relay began to make their snowmen, teamwork and communication was key to ensure their snowman was constructed correctly.
It was then revealed which team was closest in making their snowman correctly, and what was needed to complete it. The fastest team to complete the snowman were the winners.
Science- The journey of a sound wave.
Date: 11th Mar 2020 @ 10:39am
Today the children have been learning about how sound is heard. They began by having a guess what the ear looks like inside. We then watched a video describing all the parts of the ear and its functions.
In groups the children then ordered the statements describing the function of the ear and its process.
We then discussed this as a class. The children then created their own ears by folding paper and labeling each section.
The children finished off by writing an explanation of how the ear works using technical vocabulary using their ear diagrams to help them.

In school today we have laid poppies and researched Remembrance Day. We observed a minutes silence to pay our respects and visited the school garden of remembrance.
The children were very respectful throughout the morning. We learned a lot of facts such as: Remembrance Day is also known as Armistice Day, the First World War ended on the 11th November 1918 and that is why we celebrate it on this day and we also learned that the Queen always lays the first wreath at the cenotaph in London.

P.E- To build speed, strength and stamina
Date: 11th Mar 2020 @ 10:31am
The children warmed up with a relay naughts and crosses game. The children had to use speed, problem solving and teamwork to succeed.
As its Halloween this week we had a Halloween themed lesson.
Witch’s hat. The children had to dodge the witches on a broom. If they were tagged they had to get a witches hat and place it on their head, giving them to power to tag other children. The game ended when all the hats had gone. The children had to use speed and direction to succeed in the game.
Haunted House.
Their were ghosts in the haunted house who could tag the children. The children when they heard the bell had to enter the haunted house and retrieve the sweets and drop them in their bucket. If the children were tagged they were trapped in the house and were then a tagger.

We explored our novel further today by looking in-depth at one chapter and considering the thoughts, actions, feelings and surroundings of each character so that we could understand what was happening and why. We then related this to our WWII topic and linked it to evacuees and how they must have felt in the same situation.
Date: 11th Mar 2020 @ 10:25am
During P.E today the children were split into teams. They were sent back in time to 1940 when food rationing was introduced in WW2. The children had to do a food dash and collect as much food as they could. The children selected a team captain and discussed their strategy to get the most points before setting off. Each item was worth a different amount of points. Each team had to count up their points and items at the end to announce the winners.
