Welcome Back!
I hope you all had a lovely time over Easter and were able to enjoy some of the sunshine.
The gorgeous weather has had me spending lots of time in the garden recently. Alexander's been 'helping' with some of the gardening too..
This was him preparing the planter. We dug up all the weeds and strawberry plants - I've put some of them in pots for now in case we want to grow them somewhere else - and raked it out ready for planting something new. However, Alexander's got it into his head that we're making a pond for ducks there now! That and he's been putting his wellies on and playing with his pigs in the mud! He might need some convincing that we're going to grow some boring veg there!
He did enjoy taking his horses for a walk in the garden though!
Anyway, that's a little bit of what I've been doing, that, lots of walks, jogging, watching way too much Pepper Pig and Bing ... oh, and Alexander's started potty training - we've had mixed results so far. The floor beat the potty 5-3 yesterday!
It would be great to hear and see what some of you guys have been doing over Easter via the pupil blogs!

As you may already have seen, our IXL trial expired last Thursday. We've renewed this for another 30 days but there is no way of carrying over the progress and objectives you have completed from the first trial.

Hi folks!
Well done for this week - lots of you completed all the tasks that were set! Well done parents too! : )
We've started to get some great home learning photos coming in. Thanks for these Olivia:
Well done to Mr Jack V, who top scored on today's Arithmetic Test with 39/40. I want some 40's next time guys! : )
I promised I'd update you with the result of mine and Alexander's rainbow attempt, so here it is:
The paint colours will never be the same again! They're all a kind of muddy brown now - Alexander doesn't get the importance of cleaning his fingers before he dips them in the paint again!
I'm not coping very well with no longer being able to teach maths. Alexander's feeling the brunt of my frustrations. I tried some more bar model with him yesterday. We were counting Peppa Pigs and ducks (Yes, they are ducks before you laugh!). He was okay with counting how many, but struggled on finding the difference / how many more. I put it in a bar model, but other than a few snorts and quacks, I didn't get the reaction I'd hoped for! I've added the photos at the bottom.
There will be no daily learning set over the Easter hols. Please keep up with your reading (Reading Solutions & books) and IXL. It would be great to see some photos of you reading in ususal places - you might have to be creative with this due to current circumstances!
Have a lovely Easter,
Take care,
Mr Simpson
(Alexander's daffodils he planted in Autumn!)

Eagles - 27th March - Home Learning
Date: 27th Mar 2020 @ 8:04am
Good morning Eagles.
So I now understand the rainbow thing - might be a project for me and Alexander to do today! I'll update you later with the result!
Was everybody clapping last night? It was quite loud where I live. What a great diary entry that would make! Has anyone been keeping a diary?
Looks like the sun is still with us so make sure you get outside whilst you can, even if it is only in the garden - I bet your parents have some weeding you could be getting on with if you get bored!
It would be great if more of you could use your pupil logins to show some of the fabulous learning / creations you've done at home, or just to say how your getting on.
Anyway, to today's learning...
Today’s tasks will be as follows:
Reading Solutions or Read Theory: Comprehensions x2 (IMPORTANT)
LBQ:
SPAG x2 & Science - Code - t1n
Maths x2 - Code - j2n (Arithmetic Test Friday! Exciting!)

Hi everyone,
Hope you've had a lovely day and managed to get out to enjoy a bit of sun.
It's been great to see some of you using your new pupil logins to keep in touch. I'm looking forward to seeing your rainbow Rosie! That's a lot of 'Seven Worlds, One Planet', Nathan - I think I would have enjoyed the polar bear hunting too! I've seen before how they use sea ice to stand on and wait to pounce on their prey - amazing!
It was great to see some extra maths being done too, Olivia. Excellent algebra!
Some of you have also achieved some certificates on Reading Solutions. Well done to Amy (Level F Award), Prithvi (Lecel C Award) and Nathan (Level Pre A Award). Keep it up!
Also, on IXL, we have now surpassed 20,000 questions! Well done! Remember to continue to use this as an extra alongside LBQ.
I've had a nice day all in all. Alexander's keeping me on my toes! He enjoyed washing his car earlier - I might get him to wash mine tomorrow!
Take care,
Mr Simpson
Eagles - 26th March - Home Learning
Date: 25th Mar 2020 @ 6:24pm
Good morning Eagles!
Great work yesterday to those (67%) who completed all LBQ tasks, although this was down slightly from Tuesday (75%) - lets have a big effort today! And most importantly, lets beat Doves!
I had a great day yesterday and was able to spend some time in the garden with Alexander in the morning (pics to follow). We painted a butterfly (symmetry) and I was able to talk him through some maths problems with balls from his ball pool. I did try to use bar model so he could visualise the problems; however, this does not seem to work for 2 year olds, particularly when they aren't looking at what you're pointing at - reminds me of some of you guys! :)
It would be great to hear how some of you are getting along. You will receive a pupil login shortly which will make it much easier for you to get in touch and upload some of your excellent home learning. You could even upload some of your reading in unusual places this way.
Have a great day!
Remember, Stay home, Protect the NHS, Save lives.
Take care,
Mr Simpson

This is free for children under the age of 18 at the moment (usually £75) and is a wonderful opportunity for them to learn a fantastic life skill whilst they are home. Hi everyone,
Hope you've had a great day and haven't yet driven your parents crazy! I don't think I helped with that - posting a maths flipchart with 2 errors! I've checked through tomorrow's and it looks fine!
I joined in with Joe Wicks this morning at 9am. I had an extra challenge to contend with - Alexander was running around me in circles as I was lifting my knees up! We had a few close calls. I do much prefer his 'plank' method to mine though - just lying on the floor on your belly laughing!
I am tracking how you're getting on with your home learning - well done to those who completed all today's tasks! I also noticed that some of you logged into IXL as well.
I hope you're all well and adjusting to this change. I did think earlier that it would be a great opportunity to write a diary of your day to day activities and feelings. In many years from now people might find it very interesting to read how you handled this time in your lives.
Stay home, stay safe.
Take care,
Mr Simpson
Eagles / Doves - Maths. Task 2: Q13 & 29
Date: 24th Mar 2020 @ 9:44am
Task 2:
Q13
The question and picture show different questions. Answer the question - not the fractions in the picture.
1 1/6 + 1/5 + 1 1/3 =
1 5/30 + 6/30 + 1 10/30
= 2 21/30
= 2 7/10
The correct answer should be 2 7/10. However, there is a mistake on LBQ which says the answer is 2 21/30 (not in simplest form). This has never happened before, apologies.
Q29:
Eating + Playing =
1 1/4 + 5 2/3 =
1 3/12 + 5 8/12 = 6 11/12
Total - Homework.
6 11/12 - 5/12 = 6 6/12
= 6 1/2
(LBQ says the answer is 3 1/2 - it isn't. I'll check through in future - this hasn't happened before. Must be a duff set!)

The children really enjoyed World Book Day, and with a little imagination were carried away to far off lands!
Playdough, Lego and Sacrifices
Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 9:46am
In History today, Eagles Class played with Lego and Playdough! Not because the children dearly miss their days in EYFS, well not only that, but to learn about Ancient Maya settlements. Children constructed their own settlements, including pyramids, temples, plazas, ball courts and markets.
As well as this, children took part in a game of Pok-ta-Pok. They used only their forearms, thighs and hips to control the ball. The winning team (the ones who hit the ball into the hoop) would usually be rewarded by being sacrificed to the Gods; however, on this occasion we didn’t stick to tradition.

Today in Science, we created a scale model of the Solar System. We began by recapping our knowledge of the planets from the previous week including their distances and sizes, before choosing which fruit represented the planet and comparing it with our peers.
Following on from this, we then worked in groups to work out a scale model – applying our mathematical knowledge.
Once we had accumulated all of the information, we began to create a scale model of the solar system demonstrating the distances.

PSHE
Building on last weeks learning about how laws are made, this week, Eagles Class held a Class Election.
4 Budding candidates shared their manifestos and key promises and then the class held a secret ballot.
Fortunately, all candidates ran a clean campaign, no horrible secrets from the past were unearthed and there was hardly any protesting! All 4 candidates could shake hands after the election.
Well done Eagles Class!
Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 9:43am
Today, Eagles learnt about different sources of evidence that can tell us about the past.
In small groups, children learnt what pictures, objects, buildings and writing can tell us about the Maya.
We followed this with a debate, arguing which source gives us the most information. Although the objects team had a strong argument, children acknowledged that looking at all four sources is key to learning about events from the past.
Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 9:39am
In science, we conducted some research into all the planets using a range of sources off the internet and through a range of non-fiction books. We also learned about the background information as to why Pluto was declassified and demoted to a dwarf planet.
Here are some of the interesting facts we learnt today:
– Jupiter has poisonous clouds with drops of acid that would burn your skin.
– Mars has the largest volcano in the Solar System (three times as high as Mount Everest) – Venus is the hottest planet despite Mercury being the closest to the Sun. – Neptune is sometimes further away from the Sun than Pluto.
