Penguins 12th May Home Learning

Date: 11th May 2020 @ 8:16pm

Good morning penguins!

We had such a good day yesterday, let’s see if we can do the same again today!

Maths

We are going to look at sharing again today, if you still need to use objects because you’re not 100% sure then that is fine, make sure you are secure with that first.  If you can do that then we are going to move onto sharing using drawings.

Ask your grown up for different numbers (or you can use the numbers from yesterday).

Challenge: Can you use higher numbers?

Literacy

Have a read or watch of The Three Billy Goats Gruff again. The settings video doesn’t seem to be working today, sorry guys but I know you know how to write these sentences. Can you write at least 2 sentences about the setting in the story? I have added an example below.

Challenge:  Can you use the story language to continue writing your story today?

Let’s practice using our sounds to sound out and write different words.  Can you play space race today?  Try and play with sounds you need to practise with.

Daily reminders:

  • Oxford owl reading
  • Purple Mash
  • Spellings

Don’t forget to upload your pictures on the blog so I can see what you have been doing.

Have a great day!

Today in school

Date: 11th May 2020 @ 3:07pm

We wanted to mark this time and be able to show children of the future what the Lockdown of 2020 looked like. Today we have written letters to our future selves and all week we are going to be thinking of different things we could put into a time capsule, which we are going to bury when we all come back to school.

Kingfishers Home Learning 11th May

Date: 11th May 2020 @ 8:57am

Good morning everyone, I hope that you all had a nice weekend. Thankyou to everyone who submitted their writing to me last week - I am going to work on sending your feedback this morning. We averaged 17/27 completed tasks on LBQ last week. This number has dropped over the past few weeks - it is really important that we are continuing to complete our tasks to give us the best chance moving forward into Year 6...

Todays tasks

1) Read theory x2

2) Times tables rockstars x 20 mins

3) LBQ code - yrs

Grammar - prepositions revision.

Watch the link below first to recap your knowledge.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zwwp8mn/articles/zw38srd

Maths - interpret bar graphs

This week we are going to be looking at statitsics and data - to start I have set a bar graph activity. This should be a familiar type of graph to you all which has been covered in previous years.

4) Writing task - New writing task and spellings to be added to SeeSaw. Here is just one of the excellent pieces I received last week. I have broken down a list of what I would suggest to do on each day. Today I would suggest looking at examples of debates and analysing them/ finding key vocabulary/phrases.

5) Spelling list on SeeSaw - use last weeks list submitted on Thursday - test on Friday.

6) Afternoon topic work task.

Keep safe, keep active and a have a great day everyone.

Woodpeckers Home Learning 11.5.20

Date: 11th May 2020 @ 8:28am

Good Morning Woodpeckers!!

Welcome to a new week. I hope that you have had a lovely weekend. It’s been extra long because of the VE Day celebrations. I saw lots of street parties with decorations and tea parties so I hope that you had a fantastic time.

Here is your learning for today:

Here are today’s tasks Woodpeckers:

LBQ – Code   bzn   (all lowercase)

There are 3 tasks, please complete all 3 tasks. If you get stuck, read the information given.

Maths today is moving away from measures and shapes and refreshing our understanding of number. Today you will look at multiples of 4 and 8. Look for patterns and count out the multiples if you need to so that you are not guessing the answers. Top tip: you might want to write out the multiples of 4 and 8 first before you start so that you can keep looking back at them. Here are some songs to help:

Reading

Everyday I set you a reading task on LBQ. Over the week, complete one other task on Read Theory too.

Other Tasks

Take a look on the discussion blogs for this week’s tasks  😊

Remember the Pupil verification code 956789

Starlings Home Learning 11.5.20

Date: 11th May 2020 @ 8:17am

Good morning Starlings!

I hope you have had a lovely long weekend, and that you managed to celebrate VE Day responsibly. We had a street party using Zoom and my house even won the waterslide duck race!

Some of you may have heard Boris Johnson’s speech about lockdown last night. No matter what happens over the following weeks, I hope you remember to keep washing your hands and respect the social distancing. I really would like to see you all back healthy and well!

Your work this week is as follows:

LBQ: wqd

Writing Task: Your task is to attempt another newspaper article. The focus this week will be everything about Coronavirus. What has happened, what we believe will happen next, an interview with someone in your house about how they feel. Please see the class discussion page for more guidance.

Afternoon Learning: Create a graph or chart to compare different volcanoes around the world (Try to choose some volcanoes you have not researched before). You could look at their height, width, age or surface area.

Please keep logging on to TTRockstars to practice your Times Tables. You are encouraged to challenge myself, other teachers or your friends in school.

Read theory and IXL are also still available for if you would like to further your learning on an area that you think you would benefit most from.

Let’s have another great week Starlings! Enjoy yourselves, stay safe!

Doves - 11th May - Home Learning

Date: 11th May 2020 @ 7:39am

Good Morning Doves! Hope you all had a lovely and long extended weekend! I celebrated VE day at home on Friday with some scones, listened to the Queen’s speech at 9pm, sang along and decorated my house! It was a lovely event to celebrate.

Before I go into home learning I would like to say:

Y6’s – Today would have been the start of your SATS and I wanted to remind you all of how proud we are of the hard work, determination and resilience you demonstrated preparing for them. You made great progress through the year and the years before that and I am amazed with the continued effort and positivity that you continue to show towards your home learning. Your efforts have not been for nothing. The skills you have acquired at The Gates will place you in excellent position as to progress to High School and for your future after that.

This year has certainly been different, but you have shown immense maturity, independence and through all a positive mindset.

You are all amazing, you are all brave and you are all strong. Remember this!

Today's Home Learning:

1.English and Science- byd

2.Maths - xhp

3.Reading Solutions / Read Theory (Y5)- 1 comprehension (minimum)

4.Writing/Spellings – I have posted two new discussions with your weekly spellings and your writing task. Remember these are both due in on Friday. (How to access this: School Website, Pupil Login, Username and Password, Verification Code – 956789-, discussions). If you are not sure what your username and password is 1. Check School Spider OR 2. Contact the School Office.

For this weeks writing task I would like you to write another newspaper report.

Your focus this time: Schools Closure due to Corona Virus (Covid-19).

This is a chance for your to consider, how this has impacted you and millions of other children around the world.

Think about: Why were the schools closed, who made this announcement, when was this announcement made and how school closures impact children and their schools.

Our Weekly Recommendation

Every week we will share with you one of our favourite recommendations to support you at home.

This week’s recommendation links to Art. It offers you the opportunity to make and explore by offering a range of activities, supporting your creativity.

SPAG Support - Task 1:

Todays SPAG activity is a recap activity from last week – Main and Subordinate Clauses. This will help you with the tasks for the remainder of the week. I have attached the video below (from last week) to support you again this week.

Science Support: Task 3:

Below is a link to support your understanding of reversible and irreversible changes. This was covered in Autumn term and should be revision.

Owls Home Learning - 11.05.20

Date: 10th May 2020 @ 9:33pm

Good morning my little bananas!

I hope you had a lovely bank holiday weekend!

Today is my birthday! I would normally be spending it with you all in class and then seeing friends and family in the evening. Today will be a little different than normal. I will miss my birthday hugs from you all but knowing that you're safe and well is good enough. I will spend the day video calling friends and family and will have a virtual birthday party instead! (Can any of you remember how old I am today based on my autobiography from earlier in the year?)

Last week it was another member of Owl Class' birthday! He created a photo collage on his blog so we could see all of his borthday activities:

A lot of you took part in VE Day activities last Friday. It was great to see so many of you commemorate the special anniversary. A lot of you had picnics, made your own bunting and took part in 1940s games:

Today's home learning is:

IXL - Maths - Addition Strategies - E1, E2, E3

IXL - English - Nouns - M9, M10, M11

Don't forget there are 2Dos set on Purple Mash and reading comprehensions on Read Theory.

Writing Task – w/c 11.5.20

This week’s task is a memory jar task. We would like you to create either a jar which contains messages of hope or write a letter to your future self about what you would like to do when lockdown is over. Something that you can look forward to. You can do this at home and then post pictures or you can write the letter to yourself using Purple Mash. Your family can also get involved as well and write something they are looking forward to.

These writing tasks are a reflection of what the children can do, please do not worry if spelling mistakes are made. We would hope the children usetheir phonics knowledge to help them sound out and spell the words.

For the message of hope jar, you will need:

A jar

Cut up bits of paper

A pen/felt tips/ pencil crayons

That’s it, it’s really simple! Mrs Penman and Mrs Handley have made one with their children so I have included their example below, don’t they look fantastic?

I have attached a success criteria below to hopefully help you out, I can’t wait to see what you create.

Success Criteria – Letter to future self/Message of hope

I have come up with at least 5 things I would like to do

I have been creative (included pictures/colours etc)

I have used capital letters and full stops

I have said who my memory will include

I have created it with only a little help

I have included adjectives

 Have a wonderful Monday everyone!

KS1 Writing Task - Hopes for the future Jar/Letter

Date: 10th May 2020 @ 2:43pm

Writing Task – w/c 10.5.20

This week’s writing task is a creative one! We would like you to make a memory jar.  Decorate a jar and write on paper all your hopes and wishes. These can then be pulled out and completed once lockdown is over. Think about something you and your family can look forward to doing.  You can do this at home and then post pictures. If you are struggling to be creative you can write a letter to yourself using Purple Mash detailing your hopes and wishes for the future.

If you choose the jar then you will need:

A jar

Cut up bits of paper

A pen/felt tips/ pencil crayons

That’s it, it’s really simple, Mrs Penman and Mrs Handley have made one with their children so I have included their example below, don’t they look fantastic!

I have attached a success criteria below to hopefully help you out, I can’t wait to see what you create.

Success Criteria – Letter to future self/Message of hope

I have come up with at least 5 things I would like to do

I have been creative (included pictures/colours etc)

I have used conjunctions (e.g My hope is to go the zoo because I would like to see all the animals)

I have used capital letters and full stops

I have said who my memory will include

I have created it with only a little help

I have included adjectives

Please also note, that these written tasks are aa reflection of what the children can do, please do not worry about words being spelt correctly. The expectation is that children are using and applying their phonics knowledge and knowledge of tricky words to help them sound out and spell the words.

We can't wait to read the messages and letters of hope!

Eagles - 11th May - Home Learning

Date: 10th May 2020 @ 10:35am

Good Morning Eagles!

Hope you had a lovely weekend and enjoyed the sunshine. Great to see that some of you joined in with the VE Day festivities and celebrations:

We had some excellent VE Day newspaper reports this week! Our best yet! Here are Jack V's, Rosie's, Kayden's & Noel's efforts:

Reflection:

This week would have represented a very significant week for us: SATS Week.

How different it has turned out...

It's sad really. I know that all the hard work and dedication you put in this year, and the years that went before, would have come to fruition this week. I know that many of you are disappointed; some extremely disappointed. SATS or not, you have all worked extremely hard this year and should be proud of your efforts. I know you have all made excellent progress, and you do too.

However, there is more to life than SATS. Just as this pandemic has taught us - some things are more important.  Take care of yourselves, spend time with your family and keep working hard to be the best that you can be. Your efforts have not been for nothing. The skills and positive mindset that you have developed at The Gates will place you in an excellent position as you progress to high school next year and for the rest of your lives after that.

Can't wait to see you all again. I heard on the news last night that it could be in a few weeks time if all goes well, but whether its in a few weeks, or a little more than that, I'm sure we'll meet again some sunny day!

Take care,

Mr Simpson
